International Photographic Awards

Part of my photographic learning curve is to see how my images compare to others by entering both National and International photographic exhibitions and salons. These International exhibitions are open to all amateur and professional photographers world-wide.
In Australia, the Australian Photographic Association (APS) organizes both National and International Exhibitions. Internationally, the Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) is made up of more than 85 national associations in five continents and represents the benefits of nearly one million individual photographers. The Photographic Society of America (PSA) is also another very strong organisation organizing exhibitions worldwide.

Acceptances: When entering an exhibition, the first cut is the acceptances - all images are scored and a small percentage (about 20%) are "Accepted" for exhibition. It is from these acceptances that the awards are chosen. So the first aim is to have images accepted for exhibition. Next aim is to achieve an award. The awards start with Gold, Silver, Bronze and individual salon medals and are followed by a variety of HM (Honorable Mention) and Merit awards.

International Photographic Awards

"SMH The Big Picture 2015 winner"

"A Leap of Faith": These impala bucks were frisky one winters morning, entertaining a baboon as they leapt about the water hole in the Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana.

Judges Comment: This image is playful and dynamic. It is a wildlife image that is clearly of a moment, an impala in flight with a single baboon as a spectator. This image creates a light-hearted scene that is balanced in composition - as though it were contrived, yet we know it could not have been. The frame is panoramic in shape which, if cropped, could have accentuated the moment but we feel that the space on the right balances the jaunty leap. The photographer has captured a great moment of travel!

The prize: A trip for two to Japan, courtesy of Singapore Airlines, staying three nights at the Conrad Tokyo and two nights at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto with all breakfasts and a seven day JR Rail Pass, courtesy of Singapore Airlines Holidays.

    "Mine"

This lion was photographed in Etosha National Park in northern Namibia, Africa. He was surrounded by Jackals (about 30)and was definitely not going to leave the scraps of his wildebeest for them. He actually dragged the carcass for about half a kilometre and eventually hid it under a tree. It was quite a big effort for him as he stopped many times to rest before continuing. The Jackals followed for a while but eventually gave up!

    "Shadows"

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. Deadvlei is another clay pan, about 2 km from Sossusvlei. A notable feature of Deadvlei is that it used to be an oasis with several acacia (Camel-thorn) trees; afterwards, the river that watered the oasis changed its course. The pan is thus punctuated by blackened, dead acacia trees, in vivid contrast to the shiny white of the salty floor of the pan and the intense orange of the dunes. This creates a particularly fascinating and surrealistic landscape. As the sun rises over Deadvlei the shadows are fascinating but only last a few minutes so photographs have to be taken fast before the sun washes out the colours and shadows disappear!
This image was taken at Deadvlei, Namibia in April 2013.
Camera: Canon 7D. Lens: Canon EF 15-85mm f 3.5/5.6 IS USM.
    Settings: ISO 200, f 11, 1/320 sec.
